Neil MacKenzie's superb injury-time free-kick marked Ian McParland's first home game with victory as the Magpies claimed a 2-1 win over Wrexham this afternoon.

Ian McParland's side were out of the traps quickly and enjoyed the majority of the first period with long spells of pressure, and Weir-Daley opened the scoring on seventeen minutes after Steve Evans underhit a back-pass for the visitors which the frontman was onto quick as a flash to score his second goal of the season.

The visitors enjoyed a brighter second period and drew level when sub Silvio Spann's long-range effort flew past Kevin Pilkington twenty minutes from time, but late drama followed as Spann was sent off for a professional foul on Hector Sam and MacKenzie did the rest from the resulting free-kick by slamming it into the top corner.

Notts made three changes to the side which was beaten 2-0 at Mansfield last weekend, with Myles Weston, Lee Canoville and Matt Somner restored to the starting line-up in place of Austin McCann, Gary Silk and Andy Parkinson.

Manager Ian McParland and his Assistant were greeted to a standing ovation by the Magpies faithful as they took to the dugout, and the positive mood continued into the game with the Magpies making a bright start.

The pace and ability of Myles Weston on his first start of the season caused Wrexham early problems, but in the first ten minutes the Magpies were unable to test Williams in the Wrexham goal.

That was until the seventeen minutes when Notts took the lead, and it took a terrible slip-up in the Wrexham defence to present the Magpies with the lead. An under-hit backpass by Steve Evans under no pressure was enough for Weir-Daley to sniff out a chance, and quick as a flash the striker got on the end of the ball, rounded Williams and stroked the ball into the empty net. Easy chance and an easy goal, and the luck Notts haven't been having this season.

Wrexham's body language suggested the mood in their camp wasn't all too good, and Notts almost took advantage of their disappointment but Williams in the Wrexham goal pulled off a excellent finger-tip save to deny Myles Weston who let fly with his left-foot with all of twenty-five yards which had some power in the effort, but the goalkeeper made a last-gasp save to turn the ball away.

The visitors took until the twenty-fifth minute to get their first effort of any note in at goal, and even then it was off target. A deep cross from the right found Roberts at the far post who was able to head across goal towards Llewellyn, but stretching for the ball he was unable to get any direction on the ball and he could only divert the ball wide from a few yards out.

A quiet spell of the game followed in the lead-up to the interval, with neither side able to create any real opportunities. It however took the visitors until the final minute of the half to register a shot on target, and in turn it produced a superb save by Kevin Pilkington. A free-kick for the visitors found Hope ten yards out with a first-time effort which Pilkington showed excellent reactions to by turning the ball over for a corner, meaning the Magpies kept their lead intact for the break.

Half-Time: Notts County 1-0 Wrexham

The second period began with neither side making changes, but it was the visitors who were out of the traps the quicker in the second period and launched a number of attacks which fortunately from Notts' point of view came to nothing with only a Garrett long-range effort forcing Kevin Pilkington to make a save.

A poor piece of defending by Evans in the Wrexham defence almost presented a second for Notts after the visitors initially gave the ball away inside their own half, but in the end after MacKenzie worked an opportunity for himself his low drive was straight at Williams.

It was a scrappy half with Notts unable to mount the pressure they had done in the first period, and the visitors almost grabbed a scrappy equaliser after the hour after Pilkington failed to get good distance on a punch, but Spann's effort was deflected wide by his own man Williams when the ball seemed destined for the net.

Somner came close for Notts with a long-range effort with the outside of his right-boot moments later as the game began to open up a little more, and Wrexham drew level twenty minutes from time through sub Silvio Spann with a total bolt from the blue. His long-range shot from twenty-five yards flew like a bullet past the despairing dive of Pilkington, who like everyone else was taken by total surprise.

Parkinson was quickly introduced in place of Weston who was nursing a knock on an impressive first start of the season, and despite the concession of the goal the home fans remained positive and firmly behind the players.

However, the Magpies were unable to find a way through the Wrexham defence with little being created with the visitors seemingly quite content with a point. Hector Sam against his old club was introduced in the dying stages of the game to try and give Notts a final spark, but it wasn't to be. Notts had a great shout for penalty in the dying stages with Dudfield held in the box, but clearly the Referee wasn't paying full attention as a Wrexham defender was all over the Notts striker.

Sam was hauled down by Spann when clear on goal in injury time, leaving Mr Haines with no choice but send off the Wrexham goalscorer as the game approached injury time - and MacKenzie slammed the free-kick into the top corner of the net to send Meadow Lane wild, and this time Notts weren't going to let the game slip away.

Importantly the rot has been stopped in terms of successive defeats, and now McParland will be eager to get plenty of work in ahead of the double-header with Accrington and Barnet next weekend with games on Saturday and Tuesday - and a win will do nothing but build the confidence at Meadow Lane and send it sky high.
