Ian McParland today took over the Notts County hotseat with a message for the whole squad: "This is a fresh start for you all."

The former Magpies striker is to succeed Steve Thompson as boss and although he will only meet his players before Saturday's game with arch rivals Mansfield, he said they all have a chance to prove themselves.

McParland knows striker Spencer Weir-Daley from his days coaching at Forest and Jason Lee, as well as Paul Mayo.

But the rest he still has to learn about. Chairman John Armstrong-Holmes believes the players are there to mount a play-off push.

And now McParland hopes they prove that to him by implementing his football style of play, starting in the rowdy atmosphere of the local derby at Stags.

McParland said: "I will show them what I want them to do and it is up to them to show me what they can do and take it from there.

"Everybody has got a fresh start and I will treat every player the same and with respect, just as the last manager did.

"I have got my own brand of football and every manager is different but whether it is a right or wrong way, the main aim is to win football matches and that is the crux of it.

"I like to play the passing game, play the ball but you have to win football matches.

"I have my own style of play and I would like to show that but it cannot happen overnight."

McParland was delighted to have the pleasure to play under a legend like Jimmy Sirrel during his time as a player for Notts.

He said: "Jimmy Sirrel was fantastic. If I can do half as well as him I will be okay.

"I do not make predictions, but take things as they come - and Jimmy was a fantastic manager and someone you always look up to."

McParland was at Meadow Lane on Saturday, working for Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington.

He insists that had nothing to do with him taking the job now but he said he always looks out for Notts' results.

McParland added: "Every week I look out for the Notts County result.

"The fans here were fantastic to me. I spent ten years here and I love Notts County. It is a nice family club with a lot of potential and along with everyone I will fire ahead and aim to be successful.

"I have targets in my head. So I am not making rash predictions but I am very positive and hopefully it will all come to fruition."

And chairman Armstrong-Holmes believes he has the tools to achieve a play-off berth this season.

He said: "He has a young squad to work with and a few are contracted to 2009. Some expire at the end of this season and if we do not quite make it we certainly will next season.

"He has got the team to do it. He has turned down opportunities elsewhere to take this job. I have spent quite a lot of time dealing with it.

"My aim and target along with the board and Supporters Trust behind me and shareholders is to rekindle this club.

"We want to reinvigorate what was once there and we will achieve it.

"The play-offs this season is possible and we have a good chance of achieving that.

"He wants the kind of football we want to play and the kind of football he is always renowned for but equally he knows results count and has the qualities to get us out of this league and progress onwards."
