Steve Thompson was delighted with the way his Notts County side came back from falling behind in the early stages of yesterday's 1-1 draw at Rotherham United, and afterwards admitted the performance was his sides' best of the season.

The first-half was particularly impressive for an away side and Rotherham were always going to come out and attack more in the second period, but in general the performance was Notts' best this season with some fine football at times.

Spencer Weir-Daley's first goal for Notts just after the half-hour ensured a point, and Thompson had praise for his striker afterwards.

"We have been preaching from the start, me and John Gannon, about the coming together of the squad and the belief - and I thought football-wise I thought we put in a good performance," he said.

"We passed it and moved it well on the floor, and I thought Spencer Weir-Daley was a real thorn in their side.

"On another day he might have had a few more goals, and to be honest I don't think their goalkeeper knew too much about a few of his saves.

"Spencer was first class, and I was really pleased for him to score and in the midfield I thought we looked better with Matt Somner in there as the ball-winner.

"In all, we were pleased. We know we have drawn too many perhaps and we know we have to turn them into wins, but it is better than getting beaten."

Thompson felt the poor start was down to a poor kick-off from the Magpies which set the tone, and he felt in the opening ten minutes his side were 'still on the team bus', but after that he had no complaints with a spirited recovery - again showing the resilience and determination in the team.

"We started off quite sloppy from the kick-off," he said.

"Macca sliced it and they won the header, and from there it set the tone for the first ten minutes.

"We were still on the bus in the first ten minutes. We should have closed the shot down quicker for their goal, and we weren't at the races.

"After that we responded well and Spencer had a fair few chances. I don't think they had an answer to us football-wise, and once we have everyone firing on all cylinders at the same time we know we will be fine - and that is the ultimate objective but we know in this League we have to scrap and battle first, and play second.

"We had to make a few changes with Butch and Macca struggling a little, but we weren't settling for a point and we went to win it."
