Notts County 2-3 Hereford United
Full-Time: Notts 2-3 Hereford. So, despite a spirited performance and another never-say-die effort by Steve Thompson's side, they just fell a little short this evening. That said, there are plenty of positive to draw from this for the Magpies. Keep an eye out for a full report and reaction to follow here on nottscountyfc.co.uk
9:36pm: Hereford keeping the ball well, last chance for Notts to get the ball forwards.
9:35pm: A free-kick on the edge of the box for Notts, MacKenzie lines it up - but he hits the wall and Hereford break forwards.
9:33pm: Four minutes of added time - is there time for one more goal?!
9:32pm: Two minutes plus added time to go plus added time here.
9:30pm: Notts pushing hard as we approach the final few minutes. MacKenzie shoots from range, but his effort is blocked.
9:26pm: Robinson gets away in the box and looks odds on to score, but an excellent challenge by Adam Tann puts the ball away for a corner.
9:24pm: Change for Hereford, Webb for Ainsworth and straight away he attempts overhead kick which just goes wide.
9:23pm: Hereford killing time when they can, especially goalkeeper Brown which isn't going down well with the home faithful.
9:21pm: Notts forcing the issue, pushing forward down the left and enjoying plenty more of the ball. Mayo cuts inside with the left shoots with his right foot, but is just wide.
9:20pm: Crowd lifted again, we're enjoying a real end-to-end second half.
GOAL: Notts 2-3 Hereford
9:17pm: Another goal, and Notts are back in it again. Good move by Silk, Dudfield, Weir-Daley and Butcher from right to left finds Hector Sam in the inside left of the box, and he advances forwards and slots home. Game on - again!
9:15pm: Dudfield wins a header from a Mayo cross, but straight at Brown in the Hereford goal.
9:14pm: Minutes ago the crowd were buzzing, now everyone seems deflated. There was a real feeling Notts could get level.
GOAL: Notts 1-3 Hereford
9:12pm: Notts continuing to push forwards, but they are caught on the break as the Bulls once again catch Notts out on the counter attack. Guinan bursts away and beats the offside trap and slots beyond Pilkington.
9:08pm: Crowd are really lifted now, you can sense Notts getting something from this one now.
GOAL: Notts 1-2 Hereford
9:07pm: Notts have a goal back. The free-kick from MacKenzie hit the wall and fell to Gary Silk who hit a low shot which took another deflection and this time totally wrong-footed Brown. Game on.
9:06pm: Good turn by Weir-Daley on the edge of the box sees him hacked to the ground.
9:04pm: Hector Sam on for Andy Parkinson, final change by Notts.
9:03pm: Notts go so close, but hit the post. Good passing sends Silk away down the right and his cross hits a Hereford defender and deflects onto the near post with Brown beaten, and somehow Hereford clear their lines.
9:02pm: Deep Silk cross finds Weir-Daley who beats his marker with a header, but his effort lacks power and Brown claims under his bar with ease.
9pm: Diagouraga has a great chance to break away for the break away with his pace after beating the offside trap down the left. But, his tough is bad and the ball goes out for a throw. Notts make another change, Silk on for Canoville.
8:59pm: Notts sticking with three men up front, and Dudfield the target man with Weir-Daley and Parkinson on either side. Dudfield brought down on the edge of the box, hauled down more like, but nothing given. Lady luck not with us yet.
8:56pm: Weir-Daley coming on for Jason Lee, Stephen Hunt takes the Captain's armband.
8:55pm: Hereford corner met by Broadhurst at the far post, but he heads just wide.
8:52pm: Neat passing move involving Mayo, Butcher and Somner works an opportunity for MacKenzie with a fierce drive from the edge of the box, but Brown makes a fine save to turn the ball away for a corner which Hereford clear at the second attempt.
8:50pm: Notts started off brightly and put the pressure straight on, but no chances yet.
8:48pm: Notts kick off the second half.
8:47pm: The players are back out, Notts have just emerged from the dressing room while Hereford have been out for a good few minutes doing a warm-up. No changes made by either side.
Half-Time: That's the first period over with, and with no goal back despite the pressure Notts will be desparate to get a goal back early in the second period and no doubt that's what Steve Thompson will be drumming into his players in the dressing room because they have shown they can get back into this.
8:30pm: One minute added time here.
8:29pm: Notts not having any luck, balls just running away from players at the important moments. Hereford have rarely threatened since the early stages, but find themselves two goals to the good.
8:28pm: Canoville breaks forward from right-back to pick out Lee with a deep cross, but he heads wide.
8:27pm: Good brave claim by Pilkington to deny Diagouraga after he beat Hunt for pace. Straight up the other end a fine challenge by Broadhurst on Parkinson just as he was about to shoot.
8:25pm: Five minutes until the break now, if Notts can make the most of this pressure it really could be game-on in the second period.
8:23pm: Good spell of pressure and passing by Notts, who have forced another corner. A goal would lift everyone.
8:20pm: Notts looking lively here, but the Referee seems to be missing a few incidents which is setting the bloody boiling in the stand and on the touchline.
8:17pm: Notts corner swung in by Mayo and headed into the net by Tann, but the goal has been ruled out for a foul. Frustration for Notts once again.
8:15pm: Free-kick on the right for Notts after a foul on Canoville. Mayo swings in and Butcher looks for all the world to be heading the ball into the net, but a Hereford defender blocks the ball for a corner. Looked like Butcher was going to bring Notts back into the game there.
8:14pm: A frustrating start to the evening for Notts, but if they can get a goal back before the break there's still a chance of a point.
GOAL: Notts 0-2 Hereford
8:11pm: Hereford extend their lead as a break down the right sees Diagouraga pick out Guinan in the box, and from six yards out his diving header is beyond Pilkington and into the net.
8:07pm: Good spell of passing by Notts, but at the last second Hereford break things up. On the counter attack, which seems Hereford's strong point with the pace in their side, Notts have to be careful with the numbers they push forward.
8:03pm: Notts corner, falls to Mayo outside the box but he volleys well wide.
8:01pm: Ainsworth, who looks a really dangerous player, gets away down the right and fizzes a ball across the box. No-one on hand to put the ball in though. Hereford are enjoying the majority of the game here.
7:59pm: Notts fans trying to lift the Magpies, getting right behind the side.
Goal: Notts 0-1 Hereford
7:58pm: With their first shot, Hereford take the lead. A counter attack sees a terrific ball by Diagouraga pick out Ben Smith outside the box and after turning past Canoville he unleashes a powerful drive that flies beyond Kevin Pilkington and into the back of the net via a deflection off Canoville.
7:56pm: No shots yet from either side; a quiet opening ten minutes although Paul Mayo just had a shot blocked from 35 yards, the first attempt of any kind and it forces a corner.
7:54pm: Good move by Hereford down the right with Smith crossing dangerously after good work by Ainsworth, but Pilkington bravely claims the ball.
7:50pm: Neither side dominating just yet, but Notts do look solid again at the back. Already Adam Tann has been busy, and once again looking more impressive by the game.
7:48pm: Fairly quiet here at Meadow Lane tonight, suppose to be expected with a midweek game though.
7:46pm: First minute and Hereford have a corner, but Notts clear their lines. Hereford have the early pressure here.
7:45pm: Kick-off time, here we go. Hereford to kick-off.
7:42pm: The teams are out, and once again the Meadow Lane surface is looking in great condition. The recalled Andy Parkinson and Lawrie Dudfield will have points to prove tonight.
7:40pm: The players have gone in to their final team-talk from Steve Thompson, lets hope for another good performance and victory tonight from the Magpies - but the Bulls have started the season well and it won't be easy.
7:25pm: The players are going through their final preparations in terms of the pre-match warm-up. John Gannon putting the players through some passing exercises.
7pm: The teams have been confirmed, and the Magpies have named Lawrie Dudfield and Andy Parkinson in the starting line-up in place of Hector Sam and Spencer Weir-Daley. Spencer had been suffering from a knock on the hip prior to Saturday's game, so clearly Steve Thompson doesn't want to over-do him too much.
