Steve Thompson admitted after Saturday's defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park that it is his side's defensive play is something which needs to be worked on this week in training, but he was pleased with the spirit shown in the camp.

1-0 down to Wycombe and down to ten men following Paul Mayo's dismissal two minutes into the second half Notts fought back to draw level at Adams Park through Richard Butcher, but the Chairboys took advantage of their one-man advantage to eventually secure a 3-1 victory.

Thompson admitted afterwards that the concession of six goals in the last two matches has not been good enough, and as a former defender himself it was that which has left him so disappointed.

"I thought we started off by passing it about in the wrong places and holding the ball up the front, but we changed that and I was delighted when we came back into the game - only for our defensive play to disappoint me again," said Thompson.

"Our defensive play in the last two games has disappointed me, but the one thing I will say is that we have shown once again we have great fighting spirit.

"To get it back to 1-1 we were delighted and I felt we could have held it for a while and perhaps even gone on and won it, but we failed to do deal with a long punt forwards and then we quickly found ourselves 2-1 down and that really frustrated me.

"We should have held firm and got compact, but instead we quickly lost the goal.

"We then had to put it to three at the back and go for it a little because there was no point settling for a defeat, and towards the end we got caught out a few times and the third goal was tiredness more than anything."

Last season's solid start to the season is something Thompson is keen to replicate, and is keen to quickly restore some solidarity to the team - but with defenders Gary Silk, Lee Canoville, Mike Edwards and Michael Byron all injured at this moment in time and Paul Mayo suspended the defensive options are severely stretched.

He said: "Last year, the injuries and mistakes weren't happening to us because we were solid as a defence and as a unit, and at the moment we are caught in the happy medium between playing the football and getting the solidarity in the team.

"We kept going to the end which pleased me and the fitness was good, but clearly we need to work on the defensive play."
