Time To Stand Up & Be Counted
Notts County Manager Steve Thompson has admitted that he knows that despite all his sides' good play they must start picking up results soon and despite the injuries that are crippling the squad by the week he is refusing to make excuses.
The Magpies fell to their third straight defeat on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Bury, and despite a very impressive first half which saw some excellent football and chances created Notts still went in 1-0 down.
Despite the home fans turning on the Magpies, Thompson has admitted he has broad shoulders and is up to the challenge of turning things around at Meadow Lane.
"You can't play like we did in the first half and come in 1-0 down can you really," said the Magpies boss.
"We should have been 3-0 up and we played really well, and then their guy hits one from the edge of the box and we go in 1-0 down.
"I was delighted with the way we played in the first half and we created a number of really good chances, and had we put one or a few of those away it could have been a different story.
"But, just as our luck has been this season they hit a long-range effort which flies into the roof of our net.
"Even when we got back level Matt Somner made a poor decision and quickly we were 2-1 down, and then we lost the penalty towards the end and it was 3-1, with Tanny giving that away due to sheer frustration I feel more than anything.
"One big concern, as well as giving the goals away, is the fact we can't seem to hold onto getting level for too long and we've conceded after scoring on far too many occasions.
"It was evident again, but I will say the lads are giving their all and they are playing better football than we have certainly in my time here - but I know the score and we have to get results and I understand the fans are getting frustrated because we aren't right now.
"We all have to stand up and be counted. I have broad shoulders and I am up for the challenge."
Thompson feels the luck, and quite rightly so, is well and truly against Notts at the moment with further injuries lengthening the injury list with Danny Crow breaking a bone in his foot and Jason Lee breaking his arm last Thursday.
The Magpies boss goes as far to say that it is the worst run of injuries he has seen in his management career.
He said: "It seems eight now everything we do and everything we try is turning against us.
"Jason Lee broke his arm last week, then you get Danny Crow breaking his foot and Neil MacKenzie has been playing with a groin problem for a month, then you have others sat on the sidelines too.
"I know it sounds like excuses, but never in my management career have I seen so many injuries picked up by so many players in such a short period of time.
"It isn't just injuries; it is injuries to important players as well like Jason Lee and Mike Edwards."
