Ozzie Explains All
After two seasons with Notts County, come May Austin McCann will wave goodbye to Meadow Lane.
And you get the feeling as he heads out the gates for the final time, there will be a sense of regret in the Scotsman's mind.
McCann last week signed a pre-contract agreement to join Scottish First Division side Dunfermline Athletic, meaning his four seasons in England will come to an end as he heads back to Scotland.
He admits he has thoroughly enjoyed his time at Meadow Lane, but evidently knows he will be moving on thinking what might have been - but he is backing Ian McParland's men to fare better next time around.
"I've really enjoyed my time with Notts, no question," said McCann.
"It has just been a shame we couldn't do better in the League in the two years I have been here.
"I feel the Club certainly deserves to be in League One, so it is a shame we weren't fighting for promotion this season.
"For one reason or another it hasn't happened for us despite our expectations this season, but I am sure next season the Manager will stamp his authority on the team and go for promotion.
"We know we have to start winning games, and there's no better feeling than being in a winning dressing room after a game.
"After a week's work, there's no better feeling and that is all that matters."
McCann's move was revealed by his soon-to-be employers last week, and while he is heading back 'home' at the end of the season he has reiterated his commitment to Notts County until his contract ends in June.
He said: "Obviously with the position we are in towards the bottom of the table the timing is perhaps not ideal.
"I've had a couple of teams interested in signing me for next season since the turn of the year, and Dunfermline came in with a very good and firm offer last week.
"I spoke to the Manager and decided the best thing for myself was to accept the deal and sign.
"Although you could say I am looking forward to going 'home' there is still a lot of football to be played here for Notts County.
"Until the end of the season, I am not thinking about anything else but playing for Notts."
Speaking about his move north of the border, McCann admits the security of a two-year deal with Dunfermline was key to the move given his wife Nicola is due to give birth to their first child in the summer.
Thoughts of remaining in Nottingham and in England were in McCann's mind, but he admitted the offer from the Scottish First Divison outfit was one he couldn't turn down - with a burning desire to return to the SPL in the future.
"I would have happily stayed here or elsewhere in England, but the offer Dunfermline came in with was a very good one," he said.
"It gives me a bit of security, and also I feel they are an SPL team playing in the First Division so there's a challenge to bounce back up next season.
"It is a good opportunity for me to try and get back in the SPL, and with a two-year deal like I mentioned I have some security because my wife is due to give birth to our first child in July.
"Taking all things into consideration it was something I could not afford to knock back."
Yet Austin is still with us until the end of the season - so how does that feel?
"It will be strange," he answered.
"But, I always kept the Manager informed with what I was doing.
"He has been grand about it to be fair and understood my situation.
"He has also told me I will still be involved in things, but I think with Paul Mayo and Hunty under contract for next season I might not get too many games - but the Manager has told me I'll be in and around the squad.
"For myself this season hasn't gone as well as I would have hoped and I've not had an overly long run in the team.
"I'm happy with the fact I'll be involved though and I'll keep myself fit and I want to assure the fans I'll give everything I can when called upon.
"I only know one way, and that is to train hard, work hard and give 100% - and I'll be doing that until the end of the season."
'Ozzie' has one big target apart from helping Notts climb the table between now and the season's end - and that is to bag his first goal for the Club.
A missed penalty at Hartlepool last season means he is still searching for his first Notts goal, and he desperately wants to keep one little record intact of having scored for every Club he has played for.
He joked: "I would love to score; I have a record to keep!
"I've scored for every Club in my career so I need to do that for Notts County.
"It would be nice, but I don't quite see it happening!"
