Ian McParland was content with a point after today's 1-1 draw at Chesterfield.

On the final day of the season the Magpies were ahead at the break thanks to Spencer Weir-Daley's close-range strike, but Chesterfield's leading scorer Jack Lester dragged the home side back on level terms just before the hour.

And while McParland was disappointed his side didn't end the season with a win, he was happy his side ended the season on an unbeaten note.

He said: "It would have been nice to end the season with a win, but it wasn't to be.

"It was funny because we were 1-0 up at half-time, but I was wasn't too happy with the lads to be honest.

"I thought we were off the pace and some of the lads looked like they were on holiday already.

"To be fair to the boys, they came out in the second half and dominated the game, but when you are playing against forwards such as Jack Lester and Jamie Ward you have to be on your toes.

"Jack put one away, and it was a bad goal to concede. They were struggling at that stage and giving some bad balls away and their fans were getting a little restless, so it was a bad time to concede because it lifted them from there on."

Spencer Weir-Daley put the Magpies ahead at Saltergate with his third for the season after being handed a rare start, and McParland was pleased to see the forward take his opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot next season with a goal.

"I was pleased for Spencer, he took his goal well," he said.

"It was a lost cause for the boy, but he kept going and got his chance."

McParland's attentions now firmly turn towards next season, and he is hoping he can build on the promising end to this season over the summer and provide better times in the future.

He said: "Hopefully we can progress and kick on next season, and up the League.

"We want to bring success to this Club, and we'll see what we can do over the summer."
