The battle is very much on for the right to perform in the Football League next season.

Exeter City and Cambridge United go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon at Wembley Stadium in the Blue Square Premier Play-Off Final.

The prize - a place in the Football League, and League Two, in August.

And the Magpies have connections in both camps - meaning one ex-Magpie will be successful this weekend, while the other will suffer heartbreak at the final hurdle.

For Mathew Gill of Exeter City, he will have something of a score to settle. Last season as Exeter crashed at the very same stage to Morecambe 2-1, Gill became the first player to be sent off at the new Wembley late on.

The 27-year-old central midfielder made 66 appearances in our colours between 2004 and 2006, but having been a regular in his first season with us he failed to establish himself as a regular under Gudjon Thordarson and joined Exeter early in 2006.

City made the final by hammering local rivals Torquay 4-1 in the Semi-Final Second-Leg almost two weeks ago, overturning a 2-1 deficit from the First Leg.

Standing in the way of Paul Tisdale's side are Cambridge, who made their way to the final with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Burton Albion.

The former Magpie in the Cambridge camp is right-sided defender Dan Gleeson. In his second spell with his home-town Club, the 23-year-old has been a virtual ever-present this term.

Dan joined us in the summer of 2006 under Steve Thompson, who had worked with him at the Abbey Stadium. Dan made 23 appearances for us during the 2006/07 season, before losing his place to Gary Silk at right-back and he eventually rejoined Cambridge on loan before turning the move permanent last summer.

We wish both Mathew and Dan well this weekend, in what is certain to be an entertaining Final.
