Boss: "We Have Best Two Goalies"
Ian McParland has stated his belief that he has the best two goalkeepers in League Two on his books.
McParland retained the services of last season's Players' Player of the Year Kevin Pilkington in June on a new two-year deal, while Russell Hoult joined from Stoke City at the start of July.
Pilkington (34) and Hoult (35) have experience aplenty and as they battle it out for the first-team jersey McParland feels he is a very fortunate man to have two quality goalkeepers on the books.
"I would say we possibly have the best two goalkeepers in the League," he said.
"You have to go a long way to find a better pair of goalkeepers in this division."
Hoult arrived at Meadow Lane in February on a loan basis until the end of the season after Pilkington suffered a broken ankle in training.
It sets up an intriguing battle for the right to start the season between the sticks, and McParland is delighted to have the pair of them battling it out although Hoult is currently sidelined with a stress fracture to his right leg.
"We were delighted to get Russell back, and although he is injured right now we expect him to be fit for the new season," he said.
"When he came in last season he gave the place a big lift at the time, which we needed.
"He kept seven clean sheets in fourteen games and I didn't think we would be able to get him, but we've got him.
"We cannot forget Kevin Pilkington either. He was playing out of his skin until he got injured, which was so unfortunate."
