Gaffer Satisfied With Workout
Notts County Manager Ian McParland admitted he was satisfied with the performance and result in last night's 5-2 friendly victory at Hucknall Town.
McParland's side cruised to victory thanks to goals from Jamie Forrester, Ben Fairclough and a Spencer Weir-Daley hat-trick at Watnall Road.
Eleven goals have been notched in the Magpies' three pre-season games, and the Scotsman felt the victory could have been by a more considerable margin.
"I'm pleased, certainly with the goals we scored - and it could have been more," said McParland after the game.
"The one thing I was a wee bit disappointed with was the goals we conceded.
"I felt we switched off, but to be fair with the second goal the Referee didn't blow his whistle and he was talking to our boys. He didn't say it was going to be a quick free-kick so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
"I was just a bit disappointed we let one of their runners go; it was a poor goal to concede.
"There was some good finishing out there though on a very positive note, but it is important we don't get carried away.
"It was a good workout for us; but it is early days yet and we still have plenty to do.
"One thing in all the friendlies that has disappointed me is that we haven't started the games too well.
"Instead of taking the game by the scruff of the neck we've had to come into games, and I'm keen to work out why that is happening."
Weir-Daley's hat-trick was a reward for the former Forest strikers hard work as he joined Jamie Forrester on three goals for the pre-season, and McParland felt the combination of young and old worked to good effect.
He said: "Spencer worked hard and got his hat-trick, so I'm delighted for him.
"He got a few goalscorers' goals out there. He worked hard and Jamie Forrester's experience is clear to see when he is out there.
"He used his experience to win the penalty with a nice little turn, and he also tucked it away well.
"Strikers thrive on goals and both lads have three now, so that is a very good sign.
"If they don't score they get edgy, all strikers do, so we're delighted with their contributions so far."
