Ian: "We Have To Kill Teams Off"
Ian McParland has warned his players they must learn to kill teams off after seeing his side draw at home to AFC Bournemouth this afternoon.
The Magpies took an early lead through Jamie Forrester at Meadow Lane, but were pegged back within seven minutes by the Cherries in their first League game under new Manager Jimmy Quinn.
The football on display from McParland's men was certainly pleasing, but by his own admission he knows pretty football counts for little if results don't go hand-in-hand with the level of performance.
He said afterwards: "I am a little frustrated we didn't win, especially after the first twenty-five minutes when we were fantastic.
"Honestly, I was watching some of the football we were playing and I felt we should have been two or three nil ahead.
"But, we can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Seven minutes after taking the lead we gave them a goal really; it was too easy for them.
"We have to learn when we go ahead to shut-up-shop and show some character, because when we went ahead we stopped playing our football.
"We let them back into it and Darren Anderton got on the ball and passed the ball like he can."
McParland's men were in control for pretty much all the second period, but just couldn't find the goal to retake the lead - and he had praise for Bournemouth shot-stopper Jalal for some fines to keep Notts at bay.
"In the second half we came out and dominated the game, and their goalkeeper made a couple of great saves," he said.
"He made a couple of world-class saves, one from Myles Weston and one from Mike Edwards and we also had one off the line from Richard Butcher.
"Like I said football we played at times was really good, but we have to kill teams off - we must do that.
"Good football isn't that good if we aren't killing teams off."
He also had praise for striker Jamie Forrester, who gave Notts the lead with a fine right-foot volley on twelve minutes.
He said: "We all know Jamie has massive quality. I know he can do that.
"He did it against us last season, scoring with one chance for Lincoln.
"Today's goal was a quality finish."
