After years of frustrating injuries at Roots Hall, Jay has made it clear he was keen to get his career back on track at Meadow Lane.
He joined Southend from Aston Villa where he was a trainee in 2002, and he bagged his first ever career goal on his home debut days later against Cambridge United.
He later linked up with Southend on a permanent basis, but soon suffered a string of injuries before recovering in 2005 and having a short spell at Oxford prior to joining the Magpies.
He scored a number of goals from midfield during the season, as well as showing off his impressive passing abilities and vision which have made him a key player.
